*(By the way, if you cover your hands with butter you can mold fresh Rice Krispie Treats into any shape you want instead of just squares.)
All you need for this experiment is a couple marshmallows and access to a microwave. No supervision necessary! (Also--your parents may be interested to know that the microwave will not be harmed in this experiment. That's for our aluminum-foil-wrapped hydrogen balloon experiment.)
You may want to draw a face on your marshmallow first. If you want to try eating it afterwards, use food coloring. Otherwise, any marker will work.
Put that mean lean smilin' machine 'mallow o' yourn on a paper towel, paper plate, or microwave-safe plate and put it in the microwave for 60 seconds. Watch it expand to be four times as big!
My monster 'mallow started like this:
And turned into this!
Once it's cool enough to touch, open up your marshmallow and look inside! What does burned sugar look like?
